There are many over-the-counter products on the market these days claiming to enhance both male and female sexual functioning. Recently there was a recall of two products: Mojo Nights and Mojo Nights for Her. After testing these products, the FDA found the presence of two different types of Erectile Dysfunction medications: Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalfil). Although these drugs were not found in the female product, both products were immediately pulled off the market. The products were produced by Evol Nutrition Associates, Inc./Red Dawn (“Evol Nutrition”). Their website is claiming that these products have been pulled because of “severe counterfeit problems”. These two products were distributed nationwide via retail stores and internet sales between July 2011 and July 2012.
Viagra and Cialis are contraindicated for patients taking nitrates. Nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.
It’s important to speak with your health care practitioner before starting an over-the-counter product in general as most of them are not regulated by the FDA. If you believe you are experiencing sexual dysfunction seek out a specialist in your area for safe, effective treatment.
