Judy Blume’s 1970 classic “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” is being adapted into a movie. Woohoo!
I am one of the women for whom this sweet, funny, authentic story about preteenhood was a lifesaver. This book is like a good friend who is there to normalize our experience and to ease the anxiety and confusion during this particular stage of life. When the book was first published it was considered radical because it spoke of periods and puberty. I guess it just made people uncomfortable. These natural bodily functions still make some people cringe. Talking about puberty before it happens so that children feel prepared is vital to their health. I thank Judy Blume for enlightening us and letting us girls know we are not alone.
Girls are growing up fast, maybe too fast these days, but this beloved tale will resonate with girls everywhere.
