No, it can’t. But it can sure feel like it! The vagina is basically an elastic and muscular canal that leads to the cervix, which is the bottom of the uterus. It is surrounded by rings of muscle. Usually it has lots of give, it can stretch enough to pass a newborn baby! But if those muscles spasm and tighten up, it can feel almost like a brick wall, giving the impression that the vagina is indeed too small. That is a condition called vaginismus– involuntary muscle spasms that can prevent or cause a lot of pain with vaginal penetration. The good news is there is treatment for the condition. It can be treated with dilators, a series of progressively larger cylinders that will gradually stretch and relax the muscles. It can also be treated with our Botox procedure, which is done under anesthesia, followed by dilation. We perform both procedures here at Maze Women’s Health. So, if it seems that your vagina is too small, please discuss it with your gyn provider or contact us for a free phone consultation. We can help.
