I feel so much pain during intercourse. It hurts when something entrances me, like I’m being forced open ALSO the most painful thing is that I feel like somebody took sandpaper and started rubbing it against the upper inside part of the vagina, the forward-backward motion hurts sooo much, it feels like something scratches my upper vagina wall inside, like sandpaper and it burns and stings so bad.

In the past, I felt no pain during sex, everything was normal. But then I got cyst (15 cm cyst) removal surgery about 5 years ago, the doctors gave me birth control pills and I took them for 4-5 years. I stopped taking them about 1 year ago because they made me feel like shit and they would make me throw up every single day, it was awful. So about 5 years ago, the painful intercourse started to happen. I can’t even put a tampon in without pain. All I’ve been feeling for the past years, if something goes inside of me, is fire and scratches like sandpaper.

I’ve seen women online talk about painful intercourse but never about the specific feeling that I feel. The feeling of scratching, of rubbing sandpaper against my upper vagina wall. It hurts even worse if I’m lying on my back.

More information if it helps: I’ve never had normal periods my entire life and when I did, it was so painful I almost passed out and was vomiting from the pain. That happened around the age of 13. I would have a period once every few months. After I started the b.c pills I finally had normal periods, not much pain and it was on a schedule, every month, same day, everything was normal when it came to my cycle. Now that I stopped taking them, I don’t have periods anymore. I sometimes have brown discharge for 7-10 days and then it stops. One doctor told me I might have PCOS.

Is everyone else going through the same thing?

    Hi AmalieJasmine,
I am so sorry that you are having so much pain!
Birth control pills contain estrogen and/or progestin which could cause you to experience poor lubrication, dryness, and inflammation of the vagina, which may then lead to dyspareunia (painful intercourse). That pain can cause the vaginal muscles to spasm causing a tightness as well.
You may need a hormonal cream to help repair the vaginal skin and then dilation to help return the vaginal muscles to their normal state. I would recommend making an appointment with a provider experienced in vaginismus/dyspareunia to help with this. But the pain is treatable. And they should be able to answer your questions about PCOS too!

    Hi AmalieJasmine,

So sorry you’re dealing with this! I echo what Cathleen says.

From what I know, PCOS is normally pretty quick to be diagnosed at an OBGYN (I got tested for it once – they did a quick ultrasound to check for cysts on my ovaries). Endometriosis is also common and related to painful periods (and could be related to painful intercourse), but it’s a bit harder to diagnose – however, you could ask your doctor about that next time too.

I agree seeing a specialist in vaginismus/dyspareunia would help. Sometimes taking the first step to make the appointment(s) is the hardest part about treatment! but I really feel for you and hope you can get this resolved <3
