    Hello everyone,,
I had my first Pap smear today and it was almost unbearably painful and burned A LOT. My doctor told me that it was because I’m a virgin. In retrospect, I should have asked her to use a smaller speculum and to add more lube (I feel like she didn’t add any).

On one hand, I’m glad that she was able to insert the speculum all the way (even though it was painful). On the other hand, I want to start having sex with my BF soon, but I’m worried that it will hurt as much as this Pap.

Is sex as painful as Paps? Because if so, I don’t know how I’ll be able to go through that.

I also don’t know if I’ll be able to get a dilators any time soon, so I’ve just been practicing with inserting my fingers.

Macgomes – hello! Pap smears are a bad example of what sex will feel like for sure – they’re medical and not terribly comfortable, and the points you mention like the size of the speculum and the lack of lube. It sounds from some of your posts like you’re not sure if you have vaginismus – is there pain when you insert a finger or something else? Do you feel like you’re “hitting a wall”? If there isn’t pain you should be fine at attempting sex if you use plenty of lube and are relaxed. If there’s pain, I recommend talking to a more informed gynecologist to learn more!
